Dan Chaon

For our next reading, we'll be looking at some short stories written by the young writer Dan Chaon. Chaon grew up in Nebraska and presently lives in the Cleveland area and teaches at Oberlin college. He published his collection of short stories, Among the Missing, in 2001--and was nominated for the National Book Award. Chaon's most recent book, Await Your Reply, was described by the novelist Jonathan Franzen as "the essential identify-theft novel." His You Remind Me of Me (2004) is about adoption, love, and second chances. In addition to reading some of his stories, we will have the opportunity to see him read at UC next week. The details of Chaon's reading are below:

  1. The writing style of the last two pieces we read were very readable. He seems to have a very keen view of what family relationships are or should be. It would be interesting to know more about his background that may be influencing this view. His perception is very dark and distant. Alcoholic family, estranged kids, suicide attempts....
